LoRaWAN Asset Tracking FAQs

How far can LoRaWAN asset trackers work?

Coverage depends on environment and gateway placement. Typical urban ranges are 2–10 km, while rural deployments can extend much further with line-of-sight and optimised gateways.

How long do LoRaWAN tracker batteries last?

Battery life varies by reporting interval, movement, and environmental conditions. With optimised settings, many trackers operate for several months between charges or battery changes — making LoRaWAN ideal for equipment and asset tracking in the field.

Can I set alerts for movement and geofence breaches?

Yes. Trackpac supports real-time alerts for movement, geofence entry/exit, and custom events so teams can respond quickly to risk or exceptions.

Does LoRaWAN work indoors?

Yes — LoRaWAN® signals penetrate walls, floors, and metal structures far better than Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, making it well suited to warehouse asset tracking, indoor equipment monitoring, and multi-storey buildings. Performance depends on gateway placement and building materials.

What's the difference between LoRaWAN and GPS tracking?

GPS describes the satellite positioning technology used to determine location, while LoRaWAN is the wireless network protocol used to transmit that data back to the cloud. Most LoRaWAN asset trackers combine an on-board GPS chip with LoRaWAN connectivity, giving you accurate location data with very low power consumption compared to cellular GPS alternatives.

Do I need my own gateway to use Trackpac?

Not necessarily. Trackpac's network has roaming agreements with the Helium Network and other public LoRaWAN networks, so coverage may already exist at your site. For guaranteed indoor or dense-urban coverage, deploying one or more private gateways is recommended. Our LoRaWAN consultancy team can help you plan gateway placement.

What assets can be tracked with LoRaWAN?

LoRaWAN asset tracking is used across a wide range of industries: vehicles and trailers in fleet tracking, construction equipment and tools on job sites, pallets and containers in logistics and supply chains, rental equipment, livestock, and high-value items in warehouses. If it moves and has value, a LoRaWAN GPS tracker can monitor it.

What is LoRaWAN®?

LoRaWAN® is a low-power, long range wide-area network designed for the Internet of Things (IoT) devices. It is based on the LoRa (Long Range) technology that enables devices to communicate over long distances (up to 50km in rural areas and up to 5-10km in urban areas) with low power consumption. LoRaWAN® is an open standard that is maintained by the LoRa Alliance, a non-profit organization that includes companies such as IBM, Cisco, and Semtech.

Why use LoRaWAN® for Asset Tracking?

LoRaWAN® provides several advantages over cellular and Wi-Fi for GPS asset tracking. Its long-range capabilities let devices communicate over 2–10 km in urban areas and significantly further in rural deployments — enabling real-time equipment tracking even in remote or hard-to-reach locations without per-SIM data costs.

LoRaWAN® is designed to be exceptionally energy-efficient, allowing asset trackers to run on batteries for months without replacement. This makes it the preferred choice for logistics and supply chain operators, construction firms tracking tools and plant equipment, and any UK business that needs low-maintenance fleet tracking at scale.

Trackpac's LoRaWAN GPS tracker platform connects to a network of gateways linked to the internet, providing seamless and secure data transmission. Location, movement, and condition data flows in real-time and can be integrated with existing systems — making it straightforward to add LoRaWAN asset tracking to warehousing, field service, or logistics workflows.

Whether you need fleet tracking for vehicles and trailers, equipment tracking across UK job sites, warehouse asset tracking for inventory, or cold-chain monitoring for temperature-sensitive goods, our LoRaWAN® solution delivers the visibility and control your operations require — at a fraction of the cost of cellular alternatives.
